    Robust Collision-free Lightweight Aerial Autonomy for Unknown Area Exploration

    Collision-free path planning is an essential requirement for autonomous exploration in unknown environments, especially when operating in confined spaces or near obstacles. This study presents an autonomous exploration technique using a small drone. A local end-point selection method is designed using LiDAR range measurement and then generates the path from the current position to the selected end-point. The generated path shows the consistent collision-free path in real-time by adopting the Euclidean signed distance field-based grid-search method. The simulation results consistently showed the safety, and reliability of the proposed path-planning method. Real-world experiments are conducted in three different mines, demonstrating successful autonomous exploration flight in environments with various structural conditions. The results showed the high capability of the proposed flight autonomy framework for lightweight aerial-robot systems. Besides, our drone performs an autonomous mission during our entry at the Tunnel Circuit competition (Phase 1) of the DARPA Subterranean Challenge.Comment: 8 page

    NeBula: Team CoSTAR's robotic autonomy solution that won phase II of DARPA Subterranean Challenge

    This paper presents and discusses algorithms, hardware, and software architecture developed by the TEAM CoSTAR (Collaborative SubTerranean Autonomous Robots), competing in the DARPA Subterranean Challenge. Specifically, it presents the techniques utilized within the Tunnel (2019) and Urban (2020) competitions, where CoSTAR achieved second and first place, respectively. We also discuss CoSTAR¿s demonstrations in Martian-analog surface and subsurface (lava tubes) exploration. The paper introduces our autonomy solution, referred to as NeBula (Networked Belief-aware Perceptual Autonomy). NeBula is an uncertainty-aware framework that aims at enabling resilient and modular autonomy solutions by performing reasoning and decision making in the belief space (space of probability distributions over the robot and world states). We discuss various components of the NeBula framework, including (i) geometric and semantic environment mapping, (ii) a multi-modal positioning system, (iii) traversability analysis and local planning, (iv) global motion planning and exploration behavior, (v) risk-aware mission planning, (vi) networking and decentralized reasoning, and (vii) learning-enabled adaptation. We discuss the performance of NeBula on several robot types (e.g., wheeled, legged, flying), in various environments.     Autonomous Mission of Multi-UAV for Optimal Area Coverage

    This study proposes an entire hardware and software architecture from operator input to motor command for the autonomous area coverage mission using multiple unmanned aerial vehicles. Despite the rapid growth of commercial drone services, there are many limitations on operations, such as a low decision-making autonomy and the need for experienced operators to intervene in the whole process. For performing the area coverage mission more efficiently and autonomously, this study newly designs an optimization problem that allocates waypoints created to cover that area to unmanned aerial vehicles. With an optimized list of waypoints, unmanned aerial vehicles can fill the given areas with their footprints in a minimal amount of time and do not overlap each other during the mission. In addition, this study performs both various simulations for quantitative analysis and an outdoor experiment through real hardware implementation in order to verify the performance sufficiently. The methodologies developed in this study could be applied to endless applications using unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with mission-specific sensors

    Challenges and implemented technologies used in autonomous drone racing

    Autonomous drone racing (ADR) is a challenge for autonomous drones to navigate a cluttered indoor environment without relying on any external sensing in which all the sensing and computing must be done with onboard resources. Although no team could complete the whole racing track so far, most successful teams implemented waypoint tracking methods and robust visual recognition of the gates of distinct colors because the complete environmental information was given to participants before the events. In this paper, we introduce the purpose of ADR as a benchmark testing ground for autonomous drone technologies and analyze challenges and technologies used in the two previous ADRs held in IROS 2016 and IROS 2017. Five teams which participated in these events present their implemented technologies that cover modified ORB-SLAM, robust alignment method for waypoints deployment, sensor fusion for motion estimation, deep learning for gate detection and motion control, and stereo-vision for gate detection
